Gary attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from which he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. During 1971 and 1972, Gary had a Fulbright Scholarship and he studied economics and the German language at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg, Germany. From 1972 through 1976, Gary attended law school at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1976.

Gary engaged in private practice in Ann Arbor from 1976 through 1980. From 1981 through 1986, Gary served as Vice President and General Counsel for Data Scan, Inc. and Data Scan Services, Inc., two related Michigan corporations which sold and serviced CT Scanners. Since 1987, Gary has engaged in the private practice of law in Ann Arbor. He has been admitted to practice in all courts in the State of Michigan and in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Gary has practiced law and has been involved as a shareholder, officer and/or director of local businesses for the past 30 years. His law practice concentrates in the areas of corporate law, commercial law, and real estate. His law practice has included work with clients that write computer software, clients that do real-time testing of automobiles and automotive equipment, clients that sell and service high technology medical equipment (CAT scanners and MRI), clients that make and use special packaging equipment, and companies that sell, lease and develop real estate.

Gary has served as a member of the City Council and the Planning Commission in Saline, Michigan. He has also served as a Board Member and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living, an organization that works with people who have physical and/or mental handicaps. He is one of the founders of Maple Creek Development Corporation, and Bodega Development, LLC, which are two different real estate development companies. He has spoken to many groups on business organization and incorporation.
